Anémomètre de poche

Pocket anemometers are small, handy devices for measuring wind speed in various locations. They are highly appreciated by athletes and are perfect for budget-conscious individuals. So, what is the point of measuring wind speed with a pocket anemometer?

What is a pocket anemometer?

Unlike a vaned anemometer that is stationary and requires complex installation, the pocket anemometer is a portable model that allows for measuring wind speed. Very popular in the sports field, the device can also display other information such as the perceived temperature.

The portable device generally consists of an LCD screen to display information and a few buttons to adjust the device’s settings. A propeller or small turbine is located at the top of the device, and its rotation speed allows the anemometer to calculate wind speed.

Pocket anemometers are cheaper than vaned anemometers simply because they are small portable devices. They require no installation and do not need to withstand harsh outdoor weather conditions for several years. Of course, using a portable anemometer is also different from a fixed model mounted on a roof. However, during use, the pocket anemometer can be mounted on a tripod to facilitate measurement.

This equipment is often used in the sports field, especially in water sports or navigation, as it allows practitioners to adapt to surrounding conditions.

Differences Between Fixed and Portable Models

In addition to the fact that the pocket anemometer is portable and requires no installation, it is also essential to note the other differences between the two versions.

Portable models have lower performance compared to a vane model. Indeed, the data range of portable devices is limited, and only the integrated LCD screen provides weather data. However, some more sophisticated models allow for more measurements.

In general, the memory of portable devices is small. This means that data is stored for a short period. They are not designed for long-term analysis, or you will have to note the measurements in a notebook or a digital notepad as you go. However, this is not the primary use of this type of anemometer.

Finally, the pocket anemometer does not indicate wind direction, simply because the turbine is stationary and does not allow rotation according to the wind direction.

Use of the Pocket Anemometer

It is a very simple device to use that does not require any special knowledge. Once the device is turned on, you need to select a mode and then extend your arm, ensuring there are no nearby obstacles that could distort the measurement. The wind speed appears immediately on the device’s integrated screen.

Not bad this flow meter

I was surprised by the sensitivity of this product.
I cannot judge the accuracy of the device.
But for the application I had – measuring the flow of a VMC at air and ventilation outlets – I am amazed by the measurement results.
There was about a 15% gap between the sum of the sucked flows and the volume discharged outside.
This is understandable as the partial blockage of the suction duct opening changes the air speed, slightly distorting the result.
I recommend this product especially given the price it is sold for.

Wind Speed

This anemometer corresponds to what I was looking for, it works correctly. One small detail, however, when turning it on, nothing worked even though the instructions stated “2032 included” for the battery type. In fact, the battery is not included, and once inserted, it works.

What We Think

A portable anemometer that does the job! At first glance, the object is not the most attractive, but it proves effective for measuring wind speed. However, it has some limitations, particularly regarding measuring gusts, where its lack of responsiveness is noticeable. Another disadvantage is the total absence of data retention.

Nevertheless, at the price, you shouldn’t be too demanding, and this device will serve you well without breaking the bank.

Very good, now it is always in my van!

Small and compact. Useful as a guide for wind speed. I cannot work when the average wind speed is below a certain level, so this is a cost-effective solution.
Accuracy? What can you expect for the price! I was driving at 100 km/h and measured 94 km/h. Not scientific, but a useful indication.
It is always kept in the van and used whenever I think the wind could be a problem.
Super fast delivery, thanks!

A very pleasant surprise

I was looking for an accurate and reasonably priced anemometer for my drone activities, and I must say I am very pleasantly surprised by the quality and precision of the product. I tested it from my car window to check its accuracy, and it is remarkable. At 65 km/h on the speedometer, the anemometer indicated 64.5 km/h. The temperature and humidity measurement is an appreciable plus, as is the storage pouch. The USB recording function is not useful to me but works well. The min/max function is also very beneficial for recording wind gusts.
In short, for the price, I believe I cannot find better.

Excellent and simple

Everything is in the title! Used on my iPad Air 2 with the free app, which works well, this anemometer is perfect for me. Wind speed, average, or gusts, direction, with the ability to save these measurements, all in great simplicity, the app in French also helps 🙂

What We Think

This is a very good device; the WindMeter competes with other products and surpasses them in some respects. Its ease of use and easy access to data directly on the smartphone is a significant advantage. A protective case allows you to save the device when not connected to the phone.

However, it lacks a bit of precision for optimal measurements, especially for capturing wind direction. Beyond this negative point, it is a portable anemometer that will appeal to budget-conscious non-expert users.

This selection of pocket anemometers showcases the best models currently available. We have selected them because they are the most reliable devices in this category, and we offer you various models for different uses.
